This Commandment is one most precious and dear to my heart.
Is the Fifth Commandment something that everyone should obey?
As a general principle, honoring one’s parents is a good idea.
The fifth commandment links the first four commandments with the remaining five.
Commandments one through four teach us how to love and respect God.
Commandments five through ten show us how to love and respect our fellow man.
Proper respect toward our fellow man begins in the home.
The fifth commandment teaches us how to honor and respect our parents
. The fifth commandment is the first commandment with a promise.
“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee” (Ex. 20:12).
The Apostle Paul referred to this promise when he wrote,
“Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise)” (Eph. 6:2).
A long life is promised to those who have the proper respect for their parents.
If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father,
or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:
Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city,
and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city,
This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.
And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die:
so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear (Deut. 21:18-21).
“The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother,
the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it” (Prov. 30:17).
And he [Elisha] went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way,
there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him,
Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord.
And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them (2 Kings 2:23-24).
The fifth commandment reads,
“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee” (Ex. 20:12).
It is the first command with a promise-the promise is for a long and happy life. It is well worth the effort.
Now I know that in these days we would not send our children to the elders
To be stoned to death, even though some of us mothers have had enough anger in us, At times
It might not have seemed like a bad idea, However I am reminded of the
Words in the Fourth commandment that gives us an answer to rebellious children.
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Prov. 22:6).
I know that there are times that we cannot pick or choose our parents , However even though I grew
